Titanic swimdress: my own version!

Today I'm really happy: I finished my Titanic swimdress, finally! It took me more than three weeks of work but there's a long story behind. I fell in love with this dress when I watched "Titanic" in 1997 for the first time. I was 13. I dreamt that costume until now, when I felt ready to sew my own version. I looked for a pale lilac chiffon on the web and I ordered it last November but - alas - I never get it. So I immediately started to look for another fabric  but I had to stop my search to sew another Tudor gown. Then, last month, I found a beautiful pale pink chiffon at the local market and yeah, that was MY chiffon! I already knew my version wouldn't have been an accurate reproduction but I love to combine elements from my fantasy and my budget (always small). 

Fabrics used: 

- Champagne satin for the bodice

- Beige lining for the bodice

- Ivory chiffon for the skirt

- Pink chiffon for the underskirt

- Pink satin for the first sash

- Pale lilac for taffeta for the second sash 

- Pink satin for the main sash

- Pale pink chiffon for the overdress

Huge choice, uh?

So, I used as reference many photos of the costume and I saw there's a great choice of colours (someone sewn it in white, someone in light blue, someone in lilac...). The original one has a pale lilac bodice and a skirt done with different layers of dyed chiffon, but they were too many for my own version. I started sewing the bodice and I attached it to the pink underskirt.

I immediately understood my choice of a closed bodice was a fatal error 'cause putting it on the dummy has been a real pain due to the shoulders (but it looks great on me lol). Then, I sewn the ivory skirt and I pleated it according to my personal tastes. After this step, I handsewn the pink satin sash. While looking at it with attention, I noticed I didn't like it: that pink shade was too strong, too bright, too fake. It didn't looked period at all. So I looked for an alternative sash and I found a beautiful pale lilac taffeta which matched it very good and gave to the dress a more authentic look. 

The overdress has been so exciting: it was my first time with chiffon and I spent many hours in hemming it by hand. Meanwhile, I got my new serger and - hurray! - I could refine seams with that without getting crazy with french seams! The overdress has a high waistline and it's gently pleated on the back, giving to the body a very elegant shape even without my longline corset (which I'll wear under the dress though). It ends with a small train which flows when I walk: dreamy!

Titanic - Downton Abbey inspired dress tutorial

Hello guys! After some days of heavy rain and storm we have sun, spring, hot weather and ice creams, lol!

Today I'd like to talk you about my first Titanic - Downton Abbey - Edwardian inspired dress using Simplicity pattern 8399. I've always been in love with the dresses worn by Kate Winslet in Titanic (1997), and since I was a child I dreamt to wear an Edwardian costume. The pattern is not 100% accurate but it creates a nice look, though it needs some adjustments. First of all, the shape of dress is too large to be a perfect Edwardian dress and it looks more like a Regency costume, so I suggest you to choose a tight fitting. The back closes with a zip so if you're looking for  a good historical pattern,  this is not the one for you (you can always change the zip with some buttons). The pattern includes two dresses inspired by the movie Titanic, the swimdress and the jumpdress; for my costume I used the swimdress pattern (model A) which is more "daily" and simple. The original dress is made of several layers of chiffon but for mine I used two fabrics only, overdress and skirt. I'm planning to sew a good replica of the swimdress in the future, but for the moment I need to improve my skills. 

The fabric I used it grey silk with a georgette black skirt, the ribbon is of black satin. I used a normal white blouse I had in my wardrobe as bodice. As underwear, I wore a longline corset to recreate the Edwardian silhouette a little. The gloves are true vintage gloves from my grandma while the hat comes from a flea market for a couple of euros! I know the hat is not Edwardian but I don't have another one heheh *blushes* 

So, for this model you'll need:

- Pattern (of curse)

- Fabric

- Lace/trims

- A blouse/white bodice

- Satin ribbon

- Many accessories as gloves, hats, jewels

My fabric was a gift so I've been very lucky, and I had to buy the skirt only. I started cutting the two pieces of the over dress and I noticed immediately it was really large to fit the Edwardian shape (so avoid the piece 6A included in the pattern); the overdress bodice has been really fast to cut and sew because the sleeve is included in the main piece. I attached it to the overdress skirt easily and then I've been forced to accept the challenge with the remaining fabric of the skirt back: I did some pince inside the dress to hide the excessive fabric but next time I'll do a tighter cut. 

After sewing the skirt I basted it to the overdress and put the dress on with the white blouse. Then I sewed the pieces with the sewing machine and added two carriers for the ribbon on the back. The final touch has been the black lace all around the sleeves and the overdress hems, and this part took me a while to be completed since I proceeded pinning the lace to the fabric and sewing it step by step with the machine.

Aspettando Titanic pt.4: Rose's make-up

Il mese prossimo uscirà nelle sale l'attesissimo Titanic in 3d e siccome avete letto in tantissime i miei post precedenti a proposito degli abiti indossati da Rose (che potete leggere qui, qui e qui), oggi vi propongo una quarta parte relativa al trucco della nostra eroina.

Ho trovato in rete un blog spagnolo dove una ragazza si accingeva a spiegare come ottenere un perfetto "Rose look", aggiungendo tante belle foto esplicative (se capite la lingua, ecco l'indirizzo per visualizzare il post originale).

Prima di tutto, tenete presente che NON sono una make-up artist e che sono una gran pasticciona, quindi non fate affidamento al mio modo di truccarmi ahah. Scherzi a parte, il trucco di Rose si basa sulla bravura dei truccatori Max Factor (la mia marca adorata!) e su una gamma di prodotti creata appositamente per il set (purtroppo non più reperibile dato che sono passati 15 anni). Il volto di Rose presenta un incarnato niveo e perfetto, che potete ottenere utilizzando della semplice cipria illuminante e un fondotinta adatto al vostro colorito, che non appesantisca ma che vi possa donare un effetto vellutante.


*Next month the new "Titanic" 3d will be released and as long as you read a lot my previous posts about Titanic costumes, I'm gonna write something about the make-up of our beloved character, Rose. I found on the web a nice spanish blog where a girl was explaining how to create a perfect "Rose look" adding some very clear pictures (visit the link above).


First of all, keep in mind I'm NOT a make-up artist so I can be wrong. Rose's make-up is the result of the superbe Max Factor's MUA (my favourite brand!) and of a special edition of products created for the movie which is no longer avaible (15 years have passed). Her face has a perfect white and soft skin, which you can obtain using a brilliant powder and a good foundation of your own skin colour to have a perfect silky effect and a nice coverage.*

Le guance sono leggermente colorate da un blush roseo, io uso solitamente il blush Max Factor in crema della linea "Miracle Touch" (questo qui) oppure il blush Essence in polvere, che tuttavia non dà le stesse sfumature del blush Max Factor. 

Le labbra sono ridisegnate con una matita morbida e riempite da colori tenui, il più possibile vicine ai normali colori delle labbra: evitate dunque rossetti rossi, lipgloss, colori troppo accessi e sì a tonalità rosee, sempre e rigorosamente effetto MAT (leggasi: opaco).

*On the cheecks you can apply a pink blush, I use daily the Max Factor "Miracle Blush" blush or the Essence one, but which isn't so good. 

Lips are refined with a soft lipliner and filled with light colours to obtain a  natural look, so avoid every kind of red lipstick, lipgloss and accept pink shades, always MAT.*

Gli occhi di Rose sono definiti da una perfetta linea di eyeliner molto sottile, che si intravede soltanto guardando da vicino il volto dell'attrice. Usate, preferibilmente, pennellini molto sottili e non calcate troppo la linea; per quanto riguarda me non amo linee così sottili, preferisco uno sguardo da "gatta" abbondando di kajal e eyeliner, ma questo look avrebbe per certo stonato con la periodicità del film e il ruolo di Rose (una ragazza sensibile e amante dell'arte immersa in una società chiusa e comandata dal denaro). Per le ciglia, usate un mascara nero senza eccedere, giusto per allungare le ciglia e rinforzarne il colore. Ricordate, sempre, che Rose ha un look molto naturale, giovanile, romantico. Se prestate bene attenzione, la scena dove si nota un trucco più marcato è la sequenza iniziale del film, quando Rose scende dall'auto non nascondendo un certo sguardo di superiorità:

*Rose's eyes are defined by a perfect eyeliner, very thin, which you can notice only seeing a closer image of the actress. Use slim brushes to have this effect. Personally, I love another kind of eyeliner with a lot of kajal to have "kitten eyes", but this kind of look wouldn't suit the historicity of the movie and the character (Rose is a very sensitive girl who loves art, trapped into a selfish society where money rules). For lashes use a little bit of black rimmel, without exceed. Everything must be natural, fresh, young and romantic. Be careful to details: the scene where Rose has a stronger make-up is during her arrival in Southhamtpon, where she cannot hide a feeling of disregard looking at the ship.*

Ma è solo l'inizio. Non conosciamo ancora l'animo di Rose e la sua personalità indipendente. 

E ora veniamo ai capelli. Rose presenta un taglio scalato medio-lungo con boccoli rossi per nulla crespi (merito dell'arricciacapelli, considerando che la Winslet è liscia naturale), molto morbidi e corposi. Se Madre Natura vi ha fatto dono di un altro tipo di capello, potete tentare di emulare il riccio avvolgendo dei pezzettini di stoffa nei capelli bagnati per modellare, senza ricorrere al dannoso arricciacapelli. Per il colore, se avete una base chiara, abbondate di henné mentre se siete scure, non vi resta che la tinta.

Ci sono tantissimi prodotti in commercio per lo styling, avete solo l'imbarazzo della scelta tra spume e gel (io essendo riccia naturale mi affido al miracoloso olio di semi di lino).

Now let's talk about her hair. Rose wears a middle-lenght hair cut, with very soft red curls (Kate used every night curling 'cause she has straight hair naturally). So, if you don't have curls you're forced to use curling too or to wear some pieces of tissues with wet hair to give them a shape. For the colour, you need to use lot of red henné if you're blonde or to dye them if you're a brunette.

There are many products to obtain a perfect curly hairstyle,  you just have to choose yours!*

Aspettando Titanic e i suoi abiti....pt.1

Va bene, so che questo post non c'entra nulla. O quasi. Un'altra delle mie innumerevoli passioni sono gli abiti storici, in particolare quelli medioevali, rinascimentali e di epoca Edwardian. Non tutti la conosco, ma sicuramente vi verranno in mente se vi cito un film. "Titanic", di James Cameron. Sì, quello con Di Caprio. A prescindere dalla storia d'amore narrata, ciò che mi ha colpito davvero nella mia mente di bambina (avevo 11 anni quando uscì il film), furono gli abiti mozzafiato indossati da Kate Winslet e da altre comparse. Era il 1997, oggi è il 2011 eppure continuo a sospirare ogni qualvolta vedo sul web una di quelle magnifiche creazioni. 

Vorrei quindi elencarvi i miei abiti preferiti del film, poiché non tutti mi sono piaciuti e... mi piacerebbe sapere i vostri pareri, i vostri gusti, sapere che cosa preferite :)

Comincio con l'abito dei  miei sogni, che sul web ha preso il nome "Swimdress" perché indossato da Rose nelle scene dell'affondamento. Sono anni che sogno di riprodurlo per poterlo indossare, magari ad una fiera del fumetto :) Ma ecco di cosa è composto:

- L'abito è composto da più parti sovrapposte, tutte in chiffon. Essendo un materiale "pregiato", riprodurlo può costarvi parecchio, ecco perché ho desistito dal farmene creare una copia il più fedele possibile all'originale.

 

Kate Winslet

- Come potete notare dall'immagine, ci sono diversi strati tinti in colori differenti, dal lavanda all'azzurrino (lo schermo falsa un pò i colori, se guardate il film si vede chiaramente la tonalità tenue dell'abito), e l'ultimo strato presenta un leggero strascico. Il punto vita in stile impero è fasciato da un nastro di satin rosa, la parte più "economica" dell'abito, se vogliamo ;)

- Gli strati sono di lunghezze diverse e l'ultimo è il più corto, più o meno a metà del vostro polpaccio.

- Le maniche sono corte, a metà del braccio, e devono ricadere morbide. Credo che l'abito dovesse essere coordinato da guanti, data la moda dell'epoca, che però nel film non sono stati immortalati.

- Il retro dell'abito presenta una scollatura a V molto profonda, che si nota bene nelle scene del film dato che Rose ha un taglio di capelli medio-lungo.

- Il seno è ricoperto da una fascia di pizzo bianco e da uno strato inferiore sempre color lavanda, credo anch'esso di satin, come potete notare da quest'immagine tratta dai promo shots del film:

 - Dell'abito esistono due versioni, come mostrato in questo bozzetto. La versione a sinistra è quella che abbiamo ammirato nel film (a mio dire molto più bella!), quella a destra è la prima versione, molto più stretta attorno alle gambe e con la fascia rosa che circonda interamente il seno. Probabilmente, il secondo modello ricalca più fedelmente la moda di quegl'anni, che gli stilisti ingaggiati da Cameron hanno riprodotto magistralmente, ma visto anche addosso alla Winslet in un video promozionale non ricrea lo stesso effetto conturbante del primo (pensiamo alla scena dove Rose e Jack corrono nel locale caldaie).

Vi consiglio di dare un'occhiata al sito di Past and Present Creations: è una signora americana che riproduce alla perfezione gli abiti di questo e altri film, curati nei minimi dettagli. Purtroppo non è il massimo dell'economia (lo Swimdress è valutato attorno agli 800€ senza strascico, ammetto di averle chiesto un preventivo), ma per un matrimonio potrebbe essere un sacrificio ben ripagato ;) Altro sito interessante è sensibility.com nella sezione "show & tell": qui trovate le foto di tutte le amanti del film che si sono dilettate a riprodurre gli abiti ;)
